The 2022 505 Nationals were held at Sterkfonteindam from the 27th to the 30th of October. The event was sailed out of the Qwantani resort. The facilities were amazing and the class hosted a braai and lucky draw on all evenings. Racing got under way early on the 28th of October and 4 back to back races were sailed. The Funke brother won 3 of the 4 races while the team of Alex and Jonno Ham chased hard with a number of second places. Further down the field, racing was also tough with many top sailors competing for good positions. Saturday dawned with lighter breeze. Racing got underway at 11 and in the light winds team Kyle and Robert showed the fleet how it is done with 2 bullets. The Funkes chased hard but scored only one first with Arin and Richard and Alex and Jonno taking one race each. Sunday came with the forecast showing strong wind and with 3 races scheduled, racing was high speed and tough. The Funkes showed their heavy weather speciality by leading the fleet around the course and scoring 3 bullets, followed by a close battle between Arin/Richard and Alex and Jonno.
All in all the Nationals were a great event with many close battles taking place. 12 races were sailed and many stories taken home. The next event is the 75th SAS birthday event at Aeolians Club on the Vaaldam from the 16th to the 19th of December 2022.

The SAS 505 KZN Regional Championship was sailed from the 22nd to the 24th of October at the Qwantani Resort, Sterkfonteindam. The forecast showed some interesting weather and it was extremely accurate. On Friday, the class had planned a long distance haul across the dam. The morning was spent waiting to the 36 knots of wind to abate and by late afternoon the wind was more sailiable, averaging 25 knots. 3 teams took to the water and completed a 30 km dash across the dam. Maximum speeds of 21.8 knots were recorded.
The forecast for Saturday looked even stronger with windspeeds in the upper 30s. At 15h00 racing was postponed for the day as the conditions were unsailable. 3 of the teams took to the water and it proved hectic. With a rescue boat accompanying them, it was safe to try and sail in those conditions but soon the gusts of 36 knots proved to be too strong.
