Ten 505s used the 2019 Highveld Championship at Pretoria SC to prepare for the nationals, which are taking place at the end of September in Saldanha Bay. Racing got under way at 11h30 on Saturday with typical Pretoria SC conditions prevailing. The wind was extremely variable and came from multiple directions, making the racing tough and anyone's guess. Team Funke managed to get ahead and extended their lead to comfortably win the race, followed by Klass v Gruenewaldt in second and Robinson and Ham in third. Race two was sailed after lunch and conditions did not improve. Racing was close with Klaas/v Gruenewaldt taking the bullet ahead of the Funkes. Racing was again tight and this time Tiley and Ham managed 3rd ahead of Father and son team of Aaron and Mark Biagio in third.
Sunday dawned with the hope for breeze but that faded quickly and by the time the teams got out to the start line, the wind was very variable and testing. The race officer bravely started a race and positions changed regularly with most of the top 5 boats leading at some point in time. Course number 9 was sailed, which is a figure of 8 across the dam in an east/west direction. All came down to the final mark rounding, as the race was shortened. Team Funke rounded first, ahead of the pack of 5 boats and headed left, into breeze, while most of the other boats where forced to the right into light breeze. Klaas and v Gruenewaldt got ahead and their light wind skills showed as they managed to find the right puff and finish 10 meters ahead of the Funkes. Tiley and Ham came in third.
Results for the event were as follows:
1. Klaas/v Gruenewaldt - 4 points
2. Funke/Funke - 5 points
3. Tiley/Ham - 10 points
4. Robinson/Ham - 12 points
5. Biagio/Biagio - 16 points
6. Robinson/Hammick - 17 points
7. Arthur/Marius - 22 points
8. Clark/Tiley - 25.5 points
9.Thompson/Lethwaite - 25.5 points
10. Campbell/Campbell - 29 points
