On the past weekend (21/22 April) several 505s competed in the NV Autumn Grand Slam series at Stilbaai YC on the Vaaldam. The wind on Saturday was good but light with 5 races being sailed in testing conditions. 8520 - Mark B dominated the racing by scoring 4 bullets and a 2nd, while Team Ham came home in close second and Andrew Arthur with his newly acquired two dogs funking, came home in third. The event was the final organised event of the season and now all focus will shift to the 505 worlds in Poland and thereafter the nationals in September. December 2018 will also see the pre-worlds being sailed in Perth with the 2019 worlds taking place in January. Lots of sailing to happen post July.

505s again showed why they are the best boats in the world, with some very good racers at the 2018 RTIR! A number of teams participated in the Guiness World Record attempt and all had a great time in this! The results are taking long to be published but the teams are confident that they did well. All eyes are on the LDYC website to issue results. Check it out at www.ldyc.co.za

Numerous 505s coverged on the beautiful Sterkfonteindam to enjoy some great sailing with some of the best 505 sailors in the world. Johannes and Angela are visiting SA regularly and agreed to join the class for a superb training camp on the shores of the dam. Sailing started at midday on Friday, the 10th of November with some good breeze and high speed sailing. Boats were tuned and settings changes in order to ensure that all knew how to go fast in those conditions. Saturday started early with some very good racing in lighter conditions and still teams were taught what is fast and not so fast sailing. On Sunday, the teams raced across the dam and stopped every so often to chat about what was done, what showed results and how this could be improved. 505 sailing is such a great sport and the class is making a serious effort to improve the level competence of the local teams.

Kyle and Bronwyn Klaas teamed up at the 505 Northvaal Championship on the 9/10th of September. 10 boats decended on Lake Deneys Yacht Club to race the championship. The wind was extremely light and that played into the hands of team as they did extremely well in those conditions to snatch the regatta from the 2017 National Champs in the last race. Sailing on Saturday was extremely frustrating in light conditions and racing very tough. It was a bit like playing the lottery, not knowing which side might favour. The Funkes scored a 2 and 1, 1st overall while Mark and Marc did well to rank second and Klaas/Klaas in third.
The forecast for Sunday was better, with the wind forecast to be steady at 7 knots. The forecast was wrong and sailing took place in very challenging conditions, with wind coming and dying and everyone having a chance to get ahead. Race one saw the Funkes taking the lead and winning with a convincing margin, followed by Mark and Marc in second and Hurter and Hurter in third. Klaas and Klaas finished in 4th. Race two and three on Sunday turned out to be an epic battle with Klaas and Klaas, Funkes and Mark and Marc battling it out and regularly swopping positions. In both races, Klaas and Klaas took the win in the end with Mark and Marc and the Funkes, alternating between second and third. The brave race officer called for a 6th race at 1.15 pm and this turned out to be the race for the championship. The lead swopped regularly up the first beat between the Funkes and Klaas with the Funkes regaining it by the bottom mark. Klaas however, sailed through their lee in a gust and managed to hold on for the rest of the race to win the title. The Funkes ended in second and Mark and Marc in third.
The event was good and it was great to see at total of 60 boats on the water. Well done to SAS for arranging it. The next 505 event is at Boskop sailing club on the 22nd and 23rd of October and thereafter Johannes Tellen and Angela Stenger will be hosting a high performance sailing event at Sterkfonteindam on the 10-12 November 2017. Be sure to attend!
