Racing was extremely tight with any one of the top 5 teams having a chance to win the race. Saturday dawned with no wind but the breeze filled in at 12.30 and 4 good races were sailed. Race 1 was dominated by Thomas/Sean, winning comfortably as the other teams settled in. The subsequent races were a tussle between Amber/Warwick and Hans/CJ, changing positions regularly but Hans/CJ taking the bullets. In race 4, Amber/Warwick got their way with a first, followed by Thomas/Sean and Hans/CJ. Christian/Dietmar Holm, Luca and Greg and Dudley/Alan all performed extremely well, with good results followed by Andrew/Andrew, Gideon/Tjraart and Ian/Lambert.

Racing on Sunday took place in the bay in front of the resort. The wind was switch, which meant that positions changed regularly throughout the race, but in the end it was Thomas/Sean who took the first race, followed by Amber/Warwick, Hans/CJ in 3rd and Dudley/Alan in 4th. The course was moved closer to the main dam area for the remaining races and it was great as the breeze picked up. The heavier teams sailed fast with Hans/CJ winning races 5 and 6, followed closely by Thomas/Sean with Amber/Warwick and Christiaan/Dietmar exchanging positions for 3rd. Dudley/Alan recorded another 4th, while Luca/Greg found their feet after some capsizing, and also chased hard for some good 4th place results.

In the end Hans/CJ won the event (and the cover in the lucky draw), tied on points with Amber/Warwick and one point ahead of Thomas/Sean. Christiaan/Dietmar finished in 4th, Luca/Greg in 5th, Dudley/Alan in 6th, Andrew/Andrew in 7th, Gideon/Tjaart in 8th and Ian/Lambert in 9th.

A huge thank you goes to John (Wild Horses Lodge) and Craig from Qwantani for making this event possible for us.  John is an avid sailor and owns a 41 foot yacht, Golden City, on the Sterkfonteindam that competed in the 1971 Cape to Rio race. He has also competed in numerous Hobie events and has hosted the Hobies on the dam. We hope that this can be the start of a good partnership and that we can assist the resort in future by supporting it and bringing nationals and regional championships to the dam. The 505 class prides itself in consisting of good sailors, both on an off the water and putting on great events and wants to use this opportunity to showcase to the South African sailing scene that this is a class worth joining as that it is going from strength to strength in Gauteng, KZN and the Western Cape. There are plans to host events at Sterkfonteindam again in future but the detail will still have to be discussed further in future.
